With summer just around the corner, it’s time to get your hiking shoes on and head out on adventures. Whistler is filled with some of the best hiking trails around. Here is our guide to summer hiking and which ones you won’t want to miss.
Wedgemount Lake
Not for the faint-hearted, the Wedgemount Lake hike allows you to gain 1350m of elevation in just 8km. Clamber across rocks, through the forest, and emerge upon incredible views. You can’t deny that the walk is worth the view as you finally reach the top and see the indescribable Wedgemount Lake, with its turquoise glacier water.
Panorama Ridge
If you’re really looking for a challenge, Panorama Ridge is the one for you. You can choose between completing the hike in one day, or if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can camp by Garibaldi Lake. Over 30kms, this hike is recommended to take 10-12 hours. Wander through alpine meadows and forests which open up to unforgettable views of Garibaldi Lake.
Squamish Chief
Anyone who has already been to Whistler from Vancouver will have noticed the towering cliff face as you pass through Squamish. 40 minutes away from Whistler, the Chief is an intermediate hike. The whole hike can be completed in less than 2 hours. If you want more of a challenge, hike to all 3 peaks.
Joffre Lakes
A tourist favourite, if you want to beat the crowds, it’s wise to head to Joffre Lakes early in the morning. If you’re not a hiker, the first lake can be seen only minutes away from the car park. You can complete this intermediate hike in roughly 4-6 hours. Watch the stunning crystal blue glacier-fed lakes, with views over the whole area.
Train Wreck
For anyone looking for an easy hike, the Train Wreck is the perfect option. You can enjoy views of Cheakamus Lake as you wander through the forest and along the railway tracks. You will reach a clearing filled with colourful deserted railway carriages. Your Instagram feed will definitely be thankful for this one.
High Note Trail
If you take a ride in the Whistler Gondola, you can access 50km of stunning alpine hiking trails. One of our favourites is the High Note Trail. The trail takes you around Whistler Mountain with sensational views of Cheakamus Lake and Black Tusk. Not quite cut out for the whole trail? The Half Note trail offers a similar view and is only 3km rather than the 9km of the High Note.
Don’t miss the best of Whistler hiking this summer!
