How to Celebrate the Start of Winter in Whistler

After what seemed like an endless summer filled with glorious sunshine, the mountains are set to open again on November 22nd. However, for the past two years, the mountains have opened earlier than the official date, so depending on the weather it could be sooner than we think.

Although the first official day of winter isn’t until December 21st, we’re getting into the festive spirit a little early. If you are lucky enough to be in town before the onrush of the holidays, here’s how we like to celebrate the start of winter – the Whistler way.

Get on the slopes!

As soon as that first snowflake falls, Whistler locals are already eager to get up the mountain, feel the crisp mountain air, and enjoy fresh powder skiing. The start of winter is the perfect time to get on the slopes – before the crowds build up over Christmas. With thick coverings of fresh snow, the quieter slopes give you plenty of room to show off your skills and get your ski legs back after a long hiatus.

The Whistler Film Festival

Kickstarting the winter festivities, the Whistler Film Festival offers a perfect excuse to get cozy and watch some incredible films by some incredibly talented people. The festival this year is bigger and better than ever, with up to 90 fresh and innovative films being screened from around the world. Whiski Jack is thrilled to be an accommodation partner for the festival, so book one of our fully-equipped Condos or Townhomes and join in on this celebration of all things cinema.

Après-Ski

Is there anything better than sitting in a cozy bar, or huddling around an outdoor firepit, after a great day on the slopes? Whether you opt for the Dubh Linn Gate, the Longhorn Saloon & Grill, or one of Whistler’s many other iconic bars to round off an unforgettable day, après is a must for newcomers and serious skiers alike. Just remember to choose your drink wisely and dress the part – we’re talking layers, layers and more layers!

Family Après

For a more family-friendly kind of après, experience family après every Monday and Wednesday from 3-6pm in the Plaza. Starting on December 17th, join in on the winter outdoor fun with your kids and enjoy a wide variety of kid-friendly activities and entertainment – all completely free!

Explore the village

The onset of cooler evenings and shorter days doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the delights of the village. Shops and hotels go all out with festive lighting this time of year, giving both the Village and Upper Village a warm glow. The inviting atmosphere offers the perfect opportunity for you to grab a hot chocolate, pop in and out of stores, and get in some serious Christmas shopping.

With so much to do in Whistler – both on and off the slopes – visiting at the start of the winter season means you will have plenty of time to return again in the new year.
