Whistler: A Golfer’s Paradise

What do you think when you hear the word Whistler? Skiing? Biking? For sure. But Whistler is also synonymous with world-class golfing. Rated as the number one golf destination in Canada by Golf Digest, Whistler comes by the accolade honestly. Not only are there four designer courses to choose from, but you’ll be teeing off surrounded by pristine mountains and lush, Coast Mountain forests, all within minutes of Whistler Village. If you don’t have time to try them all, here’s a guide to the highlights of each course.

1. Nicklaus North Golf Course

This is one of only two Jack Nicklaus designed golf courses in Canada, and it’s the only course to ever carry his name. If that doesn’t sell you right away, this course also happens to be nestled between The River of Golden Dreams and Green lake, offering epic mountain views and the chance to see float planes going in and out of Whistler. As far as the course goes, it offers five separate tee decks ranging from 4,764 – 6,961 yards, ideal for any player wanting to challenge their game, regardless of ability level. When you’re ready for a break, Table Nineteen Lakeside Eatery has incredible views of the floatplane dock and surrounding mountains. They’ve also repeatedly been voted best patio, and offer delicious dining and crafted cocktails.

2. Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club

This unique course was awarded the 2019 North American Golf Resort of the Year by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course has been carved into the flank of Blackcomb Mountain and provides a unique and rugged surrounding terrain. The ever-changing elevation provides a true test of skill for golfers. If you’re in need of world-class lessons, you can take advantage of Canada’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy at the Fairmount Golf Club.

3. Whistler Golf Club

Whistler’s original golf course, designed by Arnold Palmer himself, offers a 6,722-yard course with beautiful, undulating greens. The valley layout is surrounded by multi-storey ancient cedar trees and has epic views of Whistler, Blackcomb, and Sproatt mountains. You’ll have to remind yourself to keep your eyes on the greens, as the surrounding scenery is so breathtaking! After an exhilarating day on the course, you can treat yourself to locally sourced fare at Palmer’s Gallery and Grill.

4. Big Sky Golf Club

Big Sky Golf Club is located just a 25-minute drive north of Whistler Village, and it’s worth every minute of the drive. The course is situated at the base of the majestic Mount Currie in Pemberton and provides the most naturally dramatic setting you could imagine. The tee decks allow for a 5,200 – 7,001 yard layout, and the closely mown fall-away areas favour the short game specialist. You’ll also want to take advantage of the locally sourced dining of the club’s premier restaurant, Fescues Restaurant while taking in the views of Mount Currie from their outdoor patio.
